Breaking news, friends:

The Supreme Court just overturned Roe v. Wade.

We knew this was what the Court was planning to do, but that doesn’t make this moment any less painful. The set of rights surrounding pregnancy and the right to choose have been in place for 50 years, and those freedoms are about to be taken away. We cannot just sit by and let that happen.

So here is what I’m going to do: If elected, I’m going to strongly support codifying the protections of Roe into federal law. The fundamental rights that women have had to control their bodies must remain in place, and I will be part of that fight.

Here’s what today’s decision means: abortion will become illegal in about a dozen states immediately. For now, North Carolina is not among them, although we know our state’s Republicans will likely do whatever they can to pass a ban of their own. Luckily, we’ve got Governor Cooper and the power of his veto, and (as of now) enough members of the minority party to sustain that veto on anti-abortion legislation. This is a clear example of why our elections matter.

But this is not just another political issue — it goes to the core of a person’s bodily autonomy. It’s personal, it’s fundamental, and it deserves a clear, strong defense.
