Q&A: Why Is Data On LGBTQ+ Communities Lost In A Fog?

Having good data is step one in identifying and eventually addressing social problems through well-considered policies. But one group that continues to lack representation in data are LGBTQ+ populations. The Center for American Progress notes that “there remains a persistent lack of routine data collection on sexual orientation and gender identity, including the disparities that affect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, population—leaving the challenges facing LGBT communities largely unmapped.” I asked Jason Richardson, Senior Director of Research and Bruce Mitchell, Senior Analyst about these data challenges on the LGBTQ+ community, how that impacts the work NCRC does, and the broader policy implications.

OCC Used “Outdated, Unclear” Guidance For Redlining Exams

In recent years, community groups such as National Community Reinvestment Coalition have negotiated community benefits agreements with banks totaling $500 billion since 2016, by seizing on regulatory reviews of mergers to allege the banks redlined. The federal government also has signaled it will intensify its focus on redlining enforcement. The Department of Justice, the OCC and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in October 2021 announced a joint effort to combat “modern-day redlining.” [Read more]

The most recent report from NCRC found that New Orleans is “gentrifying at an abnormally rapid rate” compared to other cities in its Gentrification and Disinvestment 2020 report. “We looked at 392 census tracts or neighborhoods in New Orleans for the study,” says Jason Richardson, the senior director of research for NCRC. “Sixty-four percent of them were considered eligible to gentrify based on our methods. The 13 that did gentrify based on our criteria is about 20 percent, which pushed New Orleans to the number five spot for gentrification.” [Read more]
