John –
We started this week hoping that this would be a big week for gun safety reform in Washington. Today, we got some news that has left us with the feeling of “two (small) steps forward, one (giant) step back.”
TWO SMALL STEPS FORWARD: The Senate just advanced their gun safety reform bill past the threat of a filibuster and the “Bipartisan Safer Communities Act” will come up for a final up-down vote tomorrow.
Luckily, we are fighting for a full passage of the bill, and it includes some measures Lucy has led the way on in the House, including funding to implement red flag laws and enhancing background checks for gun purchasers younger than 21.
ONE GIANT STEP BACK: The Supreme Court just released its first major decision in over a decade on gun rights – and I’m outraged. Today in a 6-3 ruling written by Justice Thomas, the Supreme Court also ruled against some of our strongest existing gun safety laws in states like New York, California, and major cities around the country. There is no doubt that the Court’s ruling will increase gun deaths in this country and embolden the NRA to push for even more extreme far-right gun policies.
With these victories and setbacks, one thing is clear: Our fight for gun safety reform in Washington D.C. and statehouses around the country is far from over. The NRA will use this latest Supreme Court decision to push their extremist agenda even further, and as a movement, we must be ready to fight back.
We can win this fight, John, but it will take all of us coming together as grassroots supporters to continue to push for common-sense gun safety reforms. Please pitch in $3 today to support our campaign as Lucy continues to lead the fight for common-sense gun safety reform in Washington →
