Friend,

Try to wrap your head around this number: $35 billion – the amount of profit the top five oil companies hauled in during the first few months of this year.

Compared to the same time last year, Big Oil’s profits have not merely doubled or tripled – they have quadrupled.

We cannot allow unfettered price gouging to line the pockets of Big Oil at the expense of everyday Americans who are hurting at the pump.

That’s why I’m joining my Democratic colleagues to take action to lower prices. This includes two key measures:

  1. Imposing a windfall tax on Big Oil’s ridiculous profits – a tax which would take Big Oil’s excess profits and put them back into the pockets of consumers via a quarterly rebate
  2. Passing a Price Gouging Prevention Act – a plan to stop companies from price gouging by imposing powerful penalties on those who implement unconscionable price hikes

But what’s happening on the other side of the aisle, Friend? Absolutely nothing – save for their pathetic attempts to score political points off of skyrocketing costs and the total obstruction of good ideas to solve the problem. Republicans – who reap millions in donations from Big Oil and energy companies – are happy to let these corporations continue profiteering off of the pocketbooks of the American people.

Time and again, extremist Republicans have opposed efforts in Congress to actually do something about the problem of rising gas costs. It’s time to call them out for their obstruction. I created a new petition to demand that Republicans STOP blocking efforts to lower gas prices, and I’m counting on you to add your name.

Please, if you support our leaders taking BOLD action to bring down gas prices, will you add your name today? Overwhelming grassroots support is essential to our efforts to overcome GOP obstruction and take meaningful action, so thank you for speaking out.

Thank you,

Dick
