Washington’s multi-million dollar student loan crisis is now $158 million smaller.
Corinthian Colleges — a now-defunct chain of predatory for-profit schools — operated multiple Everest College campuses in Washington and perpetrated one of the most notorious cases of fraud.
We found out that Washingtonians paid Corinthian Colleges tens of thousands of dollars based on inflated and deceptive job placement claims.
Attorneys General around the country have been calling on the Department of Education to exercise its authority to take action since 2016. For four years, Betsy DeVos and the Trump Administration refused to erase Corinthian victims’ debt.
Thanks to the collaboration between the Biden Administration, my office, and other state attorneys general, we erased $158 million in student debt for the 16,000 Washingtonians who did nothing wrong, but were affected by this deceptive conduct.
This is not the first time I led on this issue. Together, we passed Washington's Student Loan Transparency Act and Student Loan Bill of Rights. I will never stop fighting for student loan justice.
