Join us at our 5th Annual South Texas Adolescent Health Summit! You will be in good company as you'll mix and mingle with 125+ highly-focused professionals from South Texas including social workers, counselors, healthcare providers, researchers, practitioners, educators, community health workers, youth service professionals, and other key program staff with an interest in adolescent health. Continuing education in multiple disciplines will be provided.

Aug. 11 programming will be in person at the Harlingen Convention Center.
Aug. 12 programming will be virtual via the Zoom platform.

Each webinar is $25 unless otherwise noted and includes continuing education credit for multiple disciplines. Scholarships are also available.

Access to contraception is more important than ever. According to research from the CDC, 87% of women aged 15-44 have been sexually active in a way that could result in pregnancy -- but an even larger percentage, 89%, have used some form of contraception. This is because, in addition to preventing pregnancy, birth control can be prescribed for a variety of medical reasons, such as preventing anemia from heavy bleeding or treating conditions such as endometriosis. The Texas Campaign is committed to advocating for access to contraception.

This month, we have lots of exciting news to share about our collaborative work. The Texas Campaign partners with others across the state to leverage local and regional resources with statewide systems change. Read about our inspiring projects below. 
 
Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative

The Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative (TFYHI) establishes, funds, coordinates, and supports a multidisciplinary network of community partners to develop and test cutting edge sexual health interventions for youth and their caregivers.

In Houston, The Texas Campaign's Texas Foster Youth Health Initiative team has partnered with DePelchin's Children Center to pilot THRIVE. The THRIVE curriculum provides inclusive, trauma-informed sex education to young people and is designed to meet the needs and concerns of those in systems of care.

Our team is excited to receive feedback from our partners on these curricula and make the necessary adaptations to ensure they address the needs of youth and young adults with lived experience.

The Greater Houston TFYHI team will also continue to lead Brave Conversations training throughout the summer with local organizations that serve youth in care. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to schedule a training session for your team. 
TFYHI Resource Highlight
OkaySo App 

The OkaySo Mobile App is a resource shared during the Brave Conversations training and with young people during the implementation of THRIVE. It is an excellent way for young people and their families to receive trustworthy information regarding sexual and reproductive health and relationships from trained experts, including our Houston TFYHI Health Educators.

 
Texas Is Ready

The Texas Is Ready Coalition is composed of three organizations with a shared vision that every Texas youth deserves the information they need for a lifetime of healthy relationships and positive sexual health outcomes.

Texas Is Ready welcomes Veronica Whitehead

Veronica Whitehead, M.Ed, CHES will serve as a consultant on the project through August 2022, helping to coordinate statewide outreach efforts. We are so excited to have her on our team.
 
Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative

The Texas Youth-Friendly Initiative (TYFI) helps build the capacity of health centers to improve care delivery to youth ages 10-24 through their participation in an evidence-based model developed by the Adolescent Health Initiative at the University of Michigan. 
TYFI welcomes Tia Lucas! 

Tia Lucas is in her final semester at UTHealth in the customized Master of Public Health program. She has graduated and has undergraduate research experience working directly with communities to improve health outcomes and promote sustainability. Her experience within this field include all things sexual health, adolescent health, LGBTQ+ issues, and many others. Tia will complete her practicum with the project through August 1.
 

Let’s talk about sex. Or rather, let’s talk about how, as a community, we must come together to reduce unintended teen pregnancy through abstinence-plus education and access to contraception.

Getting teens the resources and education they need is critical. As a community, we must ensure that youth have access to the information they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
