Today the Supreme Court issued its 6-3 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen. The court decided to overturn a century-old New York state law that limited access to concealed-carry licenses for guns. Though such laws have been shown to reduce gun deaths, the conservative majority seized the opportunity to further expand access to firearms.
This decision comes after weeks of mass shootings and hate crimes in Buffalo, Uvalde, and elsewhere that were committed using legally purchased firearms. Now is not the time to weaken gun restrictions, and this decision will immediately put innocent lives in danger.
Constraining people at the state and local level from enacting common sense gun violence prevention laws will only lead to a loss of more life. This ruling ensures more death. This is not a decision that protects anyone’s freedom or liberty. There can be no liberty or pursuit of happiness if there is no life.
How many more schools, grocery stores, churches, and synagogues will be targeted because of this ruling? This opinion will only add to our nation’s gun epidemic, and this lawless, hyper-partisan Court will continue to put more lives in danger.
Now is the time to take action against this lawless court and put more judges on lower courts that will protect lives. The Senate must move to expand the court and fill every federal judicial vacancy before 2023! We are a less safe nation today than we were yesterday, and while this is terrifying, we are not hopeless.
