Breaking news, John xxxxxx:

This morning the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision to strike down New York’s hundred-plus-years-old concealed carry law. Once again, the six right-wing activists on the highest bench in our land have chosen politics over people, this time capitulating to the gun lobby at the expense of our public safety.

This common-sense gun control measure required New Yorkers who want to carry a concealed handgun in public to prove a special need to protect themselves. In a recent poll, nearly 80 percent of NY voters said they hoped SCOTUS would not repeal this law, which further goes to show just how out-of-touch the Court has become.

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn New York’s law that requires proper cause for a permit to carry a handgun is reprehensible—and it will exacerbate our gun violence epidemic.

Despite Uvalde, despite Buffalo, and despite all of the other mass shootings and instances of gun violence across this country, the conservative-controlled Court caved to the NRA by deciding to ignore over a hundreds years of legal precedent, toss out our state law designed to save lives, and claim that the Constitution protects universal concealed carry across the country.

That’s bullshit.

No matter how many of our children and loved ones die by guns, this far-right Court is putting the best interests of the gun lobby before our lives, making it harder for states and local communities to pass commonsense gun reform to protect people.

Not only did they get rid of our state’s concealed carry law, but they also decided that Miranda rights are not protected by the Constitution, opening the door for police to use anything someone says against them even if they weren’t read their rights.

This is yet another reason why we need to EXPAND THE COURT, and I’m the only candidate in this race for NY-03 calling for it.

Help me get to Congress and fight to expand the Supreme Court so we can stop disastrous roll-backs on our rights like this: pitch in whatever you can before our upcoming FEC end-of-quarter deadline now.

One thing is for sure: we will NOT sit idly by while far-right Supreme Court justices take away our rights and move our country backward.

In solidarity,

Melanie
