Beekeepers across the United States are losing their honey bees. That's a disaster – not just for our gardens but for our farmers and crops.
Honey bees pollinate many of our food crops — $15 billion worth each year — including more than 130 varieties of fruits and vegetables.
But a class of pesticides called neonicotinoids (neonics) is contributing to drastic bee die-offs. Neonics impair bees’ natural defense systems, limit their reproductive success and hurt their chances of survival. Despite the vital role bees play in sustaining our food supply, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to allow the widespread use of these bee-killing pesticides.
The EPA has a history of approving the use of bee-killing pesticides, even though they hurt both humans and bees. That means that humans will be eating, drinking and breathing pesticide poisons for years, and bee colonies will continue to die.
