New Ten-Year Roadmap Resource to Create Healthy Schools |
NASN is a proud partner of The National Healthy Schools Collaborative and supporter of The Collaborative’s Ten-Year Roadmap. The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear how connected health and learning are. We cannot return to the pre-pandemic status quo, leaving millions of children and adults in unhealthy schools. This resource offers a bold, comprehensive, and popular blueprint to create healthy schools over the next decade. Informed by the real experiences of students, school staff and administrators, families, and nonprofit organizations, as well as successful policy experiments around the country, the roadmap offers a bold and practical path forward. This is the beginning of a movement to build and sustain healthy school communities with real resources to get involved.

JOSN Article: School Nurses’ Language Needs |
|
Education is associated with improved health outcomes. However, fewer non-Hispanic Black Americans earn high school diplomas, baccalaureate, or advanced degrees than white Americans, placing them at higher risk for poor health outcomes. Through NASN’s Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™, school nurses can impact academic success and college readiness for Black youth. In this Journal of School Nursing Article: An Integrative Review of College Readiness Programs for Black High School Students; Opportunities for School Nurse Involvement, a review of the literature was conducted to describe programs to promote college readiness for Black high school students and evaluate school nurse involvement.

Influencing the Future of Nursing |

The Brandywine School District was among six organizations nationwide that received a Nursing Innovations Fund award to address nursing’s role in building health equity and well-being and promoting a culture of health. With the grant money and additional organizational support, the BSD Lifesavers program was created. The BSD Lifesavers program provides early exposure to the nursing field for middle school students. New COVID-19 Vaccination Recommendations for Children |

|
Immunization Action Coalition, Emory University, Vanderbilt University, and Association of Immunization Managers recently published an article in Vaccine, titled Supporting Immunization Programs to Address COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy: Recommendations for National and Community-Based Stakeholders. The article focuses on effectively addressing the complex challenges of vaccine hesitancy, the value of community-based partnerships, stakeholder engagement, and the next steps.

Toolkit: Addressing Decline of Vaccination Rates Of U.S. Students |
|
AASA, The School Superintendents Association, in partnership with the Merck Foundation, developed a comprehensive toolkit for educational leaders to address the decline in vaccination rates of students resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This toolkit is available to superintendents, school boards, executive staff, school-based administration, teachers, families, and community members. A major priority of this offering is to ensure that superintendents and other district leaders have the knowledge, skills, and resources to address this challenging national health issue. Know Your COVID-19 Community Level |
|
COVID-19 Community Levels is a tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly.

Mayo Clinic COVID-19 Vaccine Tracker |
|
School nurses are actively monitoring vaccine uptake for student populations. The Mayo Clinic has a resource to identify U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by state. This resource also reports U.S. COVID-19 vaccine rates by age. Learn more.

Managing Health Conditions |

Facilitating the Learning Experience During and After Cancer Treatment
School nurses play a key role in treating and supporting students and in educating students and school personnel on the various diseases that can affect students. Therefore, it is important for school nurses to understand childhood cancers and the potential effects treatment can have on their education. This program provides an overview of the effects of cancer treatment, including medical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges for survivors throughout their education, strategies to help meet the students’ educational needs, and resources to support schools and families. This program also provides ways school personnel can help siblings and peers of the child diagnosed cope and support the child, advice on communicating with the family and school community, including grief and loss, and underscores the importance of self‐care for the nurse and other school personnel. CDC released a suite of trainings and resources to promote the importance of naloxone to mitigate risks associated with opioid-involved overdose, increase naloxone dispensing in the community, and reduce the stigma surrounding naloxone through effective communication.

NASN Resources: The Naloxone in Schools Toolkit offers numerous resources to assist school nurses and other school leaders to evaluate and respond to the opioid epidemic appropriately.
