John, Did you know that when Equality Federation was founded in 1997 we were an unstaffed network of state leaders who gathered twice a year to learn from each other?
In 2004, facing a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ state constitutional amendments, our state partners decided a larger investment in building a state-based movement was necessary and Equality Federation hired our first executive director. Back then I was on the board representing Equality North Carolina. After a break for grad school, I joined the staff in 2012. Like the LGBTQ+ movement, we’ve come a long way in the past 25 years. Today we are a strong team of 14 talented queer and trans people. We are smart, hard-working, and — like you — we are very tired. Like that moment in 2004 that inspired us to grow, we are again facing a wave of attacks against the LGBTQ+ community — and now the transgender community specifically. -
In 2019 there were 35 anti-transgender bills in the states
- In 2021 there were 198 anti-trans bills in the states
- In 2022 so far, there are over 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills across the country and a third of them are anti-transgender, many specifically targeting trans youth
Now is the time to make another big investment to move the movement forward and defend LGBTQ+ rights. |
