The Guilty Pleasures of MeL

Since childhood, summer seems to be the natural season of the year to relax, wind down, and even indulge ourselves a little—often through vacations, ice cream, or long books on the beach. But have you ever considered perusing the Michigan eLibrary [ [link removed] ] for those publications that we tend to buy somewhere near the checkout line at the local grocery store? Imagine sifting through the thousands of free publications for sheer entertainment—not work or school or anything research related—just fun.

Well, MeL has some great indulgences for a little chill time this summer. Whether your pleasures are human-interest stories, catching up on sports, or even checking out what’s new in Hollywood, MeL just might have what you’re seeking.

*Better Homes & Gardens*

Founded by Edwin Meredith [ [link removed] ] and first published in 1922, Better Homes & Gardens [ [link removed] ] screams nostalgia. As US Secretary of Agriculture, Meredith had a grand idea to expand a highway from Winnipeg, Canada to New Orleans to support farmers getting their goods to market and so tourists would generate commerce. Jefferson Highway, noted in this article from Louisiana Life [ [link removed] ], remains popular among travelers. Still going strong, the June issue [ [link removed] ] of Better Homes & Gardens continues to cover topics such as gardening, health, home repair, and travel.

*People *

Published weekly, People [ [link removed] ] is available in both PDF and HTML formats from 1974 to present. This publication might lean a bit toward Hollywood gossip, but it also includes politics, business, the arts, and literature. If you want to go full-on celebrity chatter, then Us Weekly [ [link removed] ] is probably the magazine for you.

*Sports Illustrated*

While I’m a big fan of the Leading Off [ [link removed] ] series published each month in Sports Illustrated, this month’s articles [ [link removed] ] are especially interesting, focusing on the 50th anniversary of Title IX and its impact on the people and institutions throughout America. The cover story [ [link removed] ] reminds us of the profound gender inequality that existed before June 23, 1972, when President Nixon signed the Education Amendment Act.

*HGTV Magazine*

Added to the MasterFILE Complete [ [link removed] ] lineup in 2020, HGTV Magazine [ [link removed] ] is the newest checkout-line staple to make it into MeL. If this one is new to you, then enjoy some great monthly features that inspire even those of us without crafty skills like the  come on in!
