Dear Friend,
I'm going to share something important with you: we are expecting voter turnout this cycle to be significantly lower than last cycle.
Why? Three reasons:
1) It's a midterm election year, so fewer people are paying attention.
2) The timing is unusual – Maryland virtually never has elections in July, and we only do this year because a redistricting lawsuit postponed the date.
3) Unlike last cycle, the Board of Elections isn't automatically mailing ballots to all registered voters. Instead, voters have to manually request a mail-in ballot in order to receive one.
A lower-turnout election presents a window of opportunity for a grassroots campaign like ours. But it also means we need to devote extra effort to turning our voters out.
Mckayla is in the community every day, talking to people who aren't used to being listened to. Folks in Maryland's 5th are ready for some damn change – but we need them to vote.
Today, we are launching our Get-Out-The-Vote fund. Can you make a contribution?
We need to raise $10,000 in our GOTV fund between now and the end of June in order to leave no stone unturned in bringing our voters out to the polls.
This goal is a public one, so you won't need to take my word for it – you'll be able to see our progress towards hitting our goal on the form itself.
Mckayla is able to connect with voters who feel disenfranchised in a way that corporate politicians can't. She resonates with so many different people in the community, and that's what makes her special.
But it's not enough just to resonate with people – we also need them to vote!
In solidarity,
Dash Yeatts-Lonske, Campaign Manager
P.S. Join us at our Get-Out-The-Vote Kickoff Event on June 29th! We'll be launching our GOTV operation from our office in Waldorf – but you can also join virtually if you can't make it in person!
