“Do you know how it feels to have the President of the United States to target you? The President of the United States is supposed to represent every American. Not to target one. But he targeted me, Lady Rudy, a small business owner, a mother, a proud American citizen who stand up to help Fulton County run an election in the middle of the pandemic.” ~ Lady Ruby (Freeman)

Lady Ruby is the reason we must vote.  We have to participate in elections to preserve our democracy.

Consider a Monthly Donation

Are you frustrated and tired of the attacks on our democracy?  How about the recent state legislative actions that are reversing progress on voting and women’s rights? We will not stand by idly as our state and democracy is dismantled. Defending the rights of Indian River County and Floridian citizens through voter outreach, voter education, and candidates is our mission. But we need you! For the price of coffee and a scone at Starbucks, your monthly donation can help keep our office open and staffed to accomplish our goals.  Please consider signing up to be a monthly donor to allow us to continue the vital work necessary.  You can donate here or on our website:

School Board Candidate

School Board Candidate Cindy Gibbs

This Week – we need you to put one of Cindy’s yard signs in your yard.  You can pick them up in our office during office hours.  Let’s show support for our candidates!

Congratulations to Cindy for receiving the endorsement of Florida’s Freedom to Read Project!

The most important thing to do right now is to knock on doors for Cindy.  We knock on our neighbors’ doors, say a few words about the upcoming election and Cindy’s qualifications for the position of School Board Member, and then leave a card or a door hanger with them. Sign up here to canvass every Tuesday evening with Cindy here:
https://www.mobilize.us/indianrivercountydec/event/464496/

If you don’t want to canvass, we have door hangers you can hang on neighborhood doors.  You can pick some up at the Democratic office.

We now have postcards to mail to potential voters.  We provide the names and addresses and the postcards. We would appreciate the in-kind donation of standard postcard stamps.

And don’t forget to donate! Cindy’s campaign can accept donations of up to $1,000 for both the primary election (up to August 23rd) and then again before the November 8th general election.  Use this actblue link:
https://secure.actblue.com/donate/cynthia-gibbs-for-school-board-1
and share it with your friends, family and neighbors. Checks can be written to Cynthia Gibbs Campaign Account for up to $1,000.

Last, Cindy is marching in the Sebastian 4th of July Parade and will have a booth at the Freedom Fest at Riverview Park immediately following.

She will need help setting up the booth by 7:30 AM at Riverview Park in Sebastian—she will be in a 10x10 tent handing out apples and American flags and campaign literature. The Freedom Fest officially begins after parade—around 10:30 AM and plans to stay until 4 PM.

Would you like to walk or ride with Cindy in the Sebastian 4th of July parade? Email her at [email protected]

GET INVOLVED

Poll Watchers Needed!

As we get closer to election season, we need volunteers to step up as poll watchers. Poll watchers are essential to ensuring that polling locations are a safe space for all voters.  Please sign up for the training from our Supervisor of Elections.  Please note that the 3 p.m. time slot is full and that the new time slot at 10 a.m. is still available.

TRAININGS

Online, two-day candidate and campaign team training - July 9+10, 1-5pm both days. Cost/Tickets $35

Kevin Winchell, Trainer
Dates and Times: The workshop will be divided into two sections, and will therefore be held over two days: Saturday July 9 from 1:00-5:00pm, and Sunday July 10 from 1:00-5:00pm. (Ignore the fact that Eventbrite only has it listed as being on Saturday July 9; Eventbrite doesn't allow for two-part events, for some reason.) Different information will be covered on each day, so registrants are expected to attend both days. (If you have to step out for a little while to take care of something, that's okay; we'll send everyone a recording of the training so you don't miss a thing.)

Topics: Topics include campaign messaging, voter psychology, campaign strategy, budgeting and needs identification, fundraising and asset mapping, volunteer recruitment and management, voter outreach and get-out-the-vote operations, traditional and social media prioritization, and campaign data and analytics. We'll share examples and templates that will make it easier to understand and complete the campaign planning process for your own campaign. BONUS: will include best-practices for campaigning during COVID - including tips for gathering petitions, online organizing, conducting voter outreach, and fundraising.

With the passage of anti-LGBTQ bills like the Don’t Say Gay Bill and Stop WOKE Act, it is more important now than ever that we come together and stand up against hate. Vero Beach Pride on the Block 2K22 is a critical opportunity for Equality Florida to connect with our LGBTQ community and to recruit the next wave of advocates and activists to resist anti-LQBTQ attacks on our friends and families.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

This week, a fellow Democrat submitted the letter below to the TCPalm.  Remember, if we stay quiet and don’t speak out, we become complacent.  PLEASE write a letter to the editor and speak up.  If you would like to write a letter to the editor, you can submit your letter here:

It’s our responsibility as citizens to learn about candidates

Because we live in a democracy it is up to us as voters to decide what we want for ourselves and our country. It is an obligation as citizens to not only vote, but also to be informed about those who are running for office. It takes a bit of time, but it is important to know:

Not what those running say they stand for, but how they have voted on issues in the past. What is their background?

From whom are they receiving campaign contributions and how much do you think that will influence the way they will vote on issues important to you?

Don’t assume that the things they say about their opponents are true. Check them out. Be leery of any candidate whose whole campaign is based on smearing his or her opponent.

Please take the time to check out these facts about those who are running for office. We will deserve who and what we vote for.

Kathy Barnes, Vero Beach
