This year, PEN America celebrates 100 years of defending and championing the freedom to write. In addition to celebrating our history, we'll be exploring the ways in which we can protect free expression in the years to come.

This week, we're excited to announce the launch of our Centenary Campaign ([link removed]) , which will enable PEN America to address emerging and evolving threats to free expression and shape the future by fortifying robust protections for free speech and open discourse.

PEN America at 100: A Century of Defending the Written Word ([link removed]) explores the powerful story of PEN America and its century of evolution from an intellectual society of literary figures formed in the fragile aftermath of World War I to a force at the forefront of today’s global defense of free expression. This special installation features artifacts of PEN America’s work in convening both eminent and emerging writers, campaigning against censorship and book banning, and championing discourse across borders and languages. Esteemed members from Eleanor Roosevelt, Langston Hughes, Arthur Miller, Susan Sontag, and Toni Morrison to today’s President Ayad Akhtar trace PEN America’s history through letters, photographs, prizes, and posters. ** Celebrating Critical Moments in the History of Free Speech with Flashpoints

Flashpoints: Free Speech in American History, Culture & Society ([link removed]) is an event series that will present the fascinating and complex history of free speech in American democracy to public audiences in cities across the country. The series will examine how free speech has evolved, illuminate past debates over who has the right to speak and shed light on present debates about free speech in the context of protest, dissent, and the quest for social change.

Join us for our next event, Entangled Histories: Free Speech & Civil Rights from the 1960’s to Today ([link removed]) , on Thursday, July 28 at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama.
