** June is Pride month!
------------------------------------------------------------

For more than 50 years, Peace Over Violence has provided consistent, crucial healing services for survivors of violence and critical prevention education to help bring about cultural shifts in our field and communities. We know that LGBTQIA+ folks experience higher levels of violence, including domestic and sexual violence - and survivors face heightened barriers when it comes to disclosing their experiences or getting support.

Because of this and in observance of Pride Month, Peace Over Violence has launched new special edition merch to reaffirm our support for domestic and sexual violence survivors of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions and the fight for liberation. Created at our Peace Over Violence Design Studio, these new products feature a custom designed and inclusive rainbow with the key messages of liberation, expression, solidarity, love & pride OVER VIOLENCE.

Proceeds from each product provide critical unrestricted funding and support direct services to LGBTQIA+ survivors.

** Juneteenth
------------------------------------------------------------
June also sees the commemoration of Juneteenth. Peace Over Violence recognizes and celebrates Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”), which marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed.

The troops’ arrival came a full 2.5 years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.

** Ways for allies continue to celebrate and honor Juneteenth:
------------------------------------------------------------
* Eat at a Black-owned restaurant near you
* Shop at a Black-owned business
* Learn more about Black culture — visit a museum or watch a film made by and starring Black creatives
* Support Black organizations and causes
* Promote brave conversations about history, race and culture, and activism

** Action Over Gun Violence
------------------------------------------------------------
By Patti Giggans

There are common sense applications that can serve the collective and community good and prevent the murder of children, suicides and death from domestic violence. We know that no single policy alone can eliminate gun violence. However, research shows that states that enact a variety of rules that make it tougher to buy and use guns, and that limit the types of weapons available to the public and the ways that they are sold, can go a long way to promote gun safety and decrease the amount of gun violence.

** POV’s People: Where are they now?
------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout this year, we will be highlighting individuals or groups that have impacted our work over the last 50 years.

Emily Austin
------------------------------------------------------------
Former POV Staff member and Current Advisory Board member

Emily Austin joined Peace Over Violence in 2008. After graduating from law school, she worked with POV and the California Women’s Law Center on developing school-based teen dating violence response and prevention policy. POV’s dedication to policy advocacy and systems change provided for amazing personal growth and an opportunity to focus on prevention strategies. She became the Director of Prevention and then the Director of Policy and Evaluation during her eight years at POV. She was able to work with the POV team to revise the In Touch With Teens Curriculum, develop the Be Strong curriculum, advocate for state policy changes, and engage on the national stage in the areas of community organizing, prevention, and policy. Also, during her time at POV she had four delightful children.

After leaving POV, Emily joined ValorUS ([link removed]) (formerly CALCASA), a national organization committed to advancing equity and ending sexual violence. As the Director of Advocacy, she supported policy work in the state and worked on systems change projects in California in the areas of campus, military, incarcerated/prison systems, and trafficking. In 2019, Emily founded Pivot Advocacy, PC ([link removed]) a consulting firm supporting advocacy and systems change to end gender-based violence and promote equity. She continues to work in California and nationally to center the voice of those most marginalized, spread the tenants of trauma-informed care, and challenge systems and institutions to create lasting change to end violence.

"Peace Over Violence was critical in shaping my career and passions for preventing gender-based violence, working with youth, and creating lasting change through policy and advocacy. This organization nurtures the understanding that violence is not inevitable and that we can shift the institutions, systems, and norms to end all forms of violence."
