John, this is a win for our movement.
Earlier this month, President Biden announced that his administration will use the Defense Production Act to spur domestic clean energy production. And yesterday, the House secured $100 MILLION in funding for it.
At a time of intensifying climate disasters and an extremist Supreme Court about to severely limit the government’s ability to stop the climate crisis, President Biden’s use of the DPA to ramp up renewables production and energy efficiency – and the House authorizing funding for these projects – is exactly the type of leadership we expect and need more of.
But John, President Biden is already waffling on his commitment to clean energy. Just yesterday, he rewarded fossil fuel companies with a $10 billion tax break by suspending the gas tax.
Nearly one-third of the US is under extreme heat advisories and breathing toxic air from raging wildfires, the extremist Supreme Court is about to severely limit the government’s ability to stop the climate crisis, and Senator Manchin continues to block any significant investments in renewable energy.
It’s clear that parts of our government are bought out and broken, so if President Biden wants to reach his climate goals — if he wants to save our generation — he must continue to use his executive authority to address the climate crisis. And we need nothing less than a WWII-scale mobilization to justly transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
In solidarity,
Varshini, Sunrise
