John,

Last night, my Senate colleagues introduced bipartisan legislation outlining the first major gun safety reforms with a chance of becoming law in decades. Earlier this week, I joined The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about this very issue. Please watch our conversation here:

Here’s what I told Stephen Colbert when he asked if this bill will pass: There will be all kinds of games played on the Senate floor to try to kill the bill. But we are way closer than where we've ever been in 30-plus years in the Senate. We have never gotten this close to passing gun safety legislation. We are in a good spot.

But we have a lot more work to do. We need to pass this bill, but we need to keep pushing for more because this legislation is just a first step. I hope Americans who want common sense gun safety laws will keep calling their elected officials and making the case for change.

This bill — which is being considered by the Senate this week — takes needed steps to help states implement crisis intervention laws, closes the so-called boyfriend loophole, provides funding for community violence intervention programs, and creates advanced background checks to buy a firearm for those under 21 years old. It will save lives. But I know there is still so much more work to be done, from universal background checks to gun licensing. With your continued support and activism, I know we can make that happen together.
