John –
The tipping point for me deciding to run for Congress back in 2018 was when I looked at my students and asked: Who will speak for them?
Today, I am reflecting on that same question, as GOP State Legislatures around the country deny basic rights to LGBTQ+ students and teachers who deserve the freedom to be themselves.
Every person – no matter who they love, or how they identify – deserves equal protection under the law. That’s why I am an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, which is historic legislation that extends full anti-discrimination protections to LGBTQ+ people under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Now I am asking you, John: Should Congress pass full anti-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community?
In Washington, I work to be a champion for all, including the LGBTQ+ community. I work to put an end to decades of discrimination and ensure fair and equitable treatment in every facet of life for all Americans. I am a proud member of the Congressional Equality Caucus and have led a number of policy initiatives to ensure protections for the LGBTQ+ community, including anti-bullying and abuse initiatives to help keep LGBTQ+ kids safe.
So when I asked – Who will speak for our children? – I decided that person would be ME. We need representatives willing to speak out across all levels of government to affirm and recognize the dignity of LGBTQ+ Americans and to ensure equal rights under the law.
If you are with me, John, let me know what you think about legislation that extends full anti-discrimination protections to our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.
I hope you have a joyful and safe Pride Month. I would love to hear how you are celebrating Pride Month and what Pride means to you. You can write to me and my team by replying to this email.
