We talk a lot about FEC fundraising deadlines, so we wanted to take a moment to explain why they are so important to Mark Kelly’s chances.
When an FEC deadline ends, candidates are legally required to report how much money they’ve raised. Right now, our opponents don’t know what we’ve raised. And we don’t know what they’ve raised either.
There could be campaigns, PACs, or dark money groups raising absurd amounts of money, and they’re ready to spring it on us. That could mean attacks ads on TV, on the radio, online, billboards — even blimps. Seriously. We won’t know for sure until after this deadline.
We have to raise everything we can so we’re prepared to fight back, no matter what happens.
At the same time, outside groups will be looking to see what we’ve raised. They’ll want to know if we’re vulnerable. If we are, they’re more likely to attack. But if we file a strong report, we might be able to scare them off.
That’s why these deadlines are so important — strategically and practically. We look at all these reports and make important budget decisions.
And since these emails are the primary way Mark Kelly’s campaign raises money, it means we have to ask:
