Jack, the world's richest man, Elon Musk, is one step closer to taking over social media giant Twitter after the company's board of directors unanimously voted to recommend the acquisition.
You probably know all the reasons why this is bad—billionaires already have outsize influence on society without having personal control of media outlets like Twitter; Musk is promising to bring even less moderation to the toxic cesspool of disinformation and racism that can be found on social media; and his long history of horrible comments and actions—but I'm going to add one more: Musk says he's "leaning toward" supporting Ron DeSantis for president.
That's right, Ron DeSantis—the guy who's dedicated his governorship to destroying COVID tests, attacking gay kids, and actively working against vaccinating his constituents. This is the guy whom Elon Musk says he's interested in backing. Now imagine what the world's richest man would be able to do for a guy like DeSantis with control over a platform like Twitter.
Daily Kos has no billionaire backers, like Musk or like any number of other right-wing oligarchs who have propped up extremist outlets like Breitbart over the past decade. We are a proudly independent news outlet that relies on hundreds of thousands of readers like you to each chip in a few bucks at a time to keep us going.
Right now, we are $161,421 away from our monthly goal, so I am asking you to please donate $5 right now to help us close the books on June and keep Daily Kos free and independent.
