It is my pleasure to share with you The Hastings Center’s 2021 Annual Report Deciding Together, which highlights some of our key projects and accomplishments over the course of last year.
Much of our work in 2021 explored, underscored, or demonstrated the importance of finding inclusive ways to deliberate effectively about complex issues, despite the polarization confronting our society. As a nonpartisan, independent bioethics research institute that prioritizes public engagement, The Hastings Center takes great pride in convening and engaging thoughtful stakeholders who offer broad diversity of perspective on a particular issue. We worked hard to build on that reputation in 2021.
As you will see, our accomplishments ranged from special reports on democracy in crisis and gene editing in the wild, to webinars on ethics topics raised by the pandemic, to a discussion series on disability and flourishing, to bioethics workshops for journalists. We continued pathbreaking research on bioethics in community health, ethics and sociogenomics, and aging and care near the end of life. Across all of these efforts, our scholars aimed to center diversity, equity, and inclusion. By so doing, we enhanced the breadth, depth, and relevance of our own work and the field of bioethics as a whole.
I hope you will take a moment to review this report and forward it to others who may not yet know about The Hastings Center. If you share our commitment to bioethics, one that invites the thoughtful input of all voices and prioritizes Deciding Together as a challenging yet promising path forward, we welcome and appreciate your support for our continued efforts.
Our mission is more important today than ever. Thank you for your enduring interest in our work.
