** Writing for The Scotsman, Senior Policy and Public Affairs Manager for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland, David McColgon, discusses the findings of a recent YouGov poll which found the majority of Scots (67%) felt the Scottish Government should be doing more to improve public health.
As McColgon states, BHF Scotland recently formed a coalition with eight leading health charities who are calling on the Scottish Government to take more decisive action against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lung disease and diabetes, which account for more than 40,000 deaths in Scotland each year.
McColgon highlights the key findings from the YouGov poll which revealed 78% of respondents were in favour of banning advertising of all tobacco and nicotine products and 62% would welcome restrictions on alcohol advertising, sponsorship and promotions.
He concludes by imploring the Scottish Government “to take bold action and deliver a comprehensive public health bill urgently” to tackle the significant public health burden of NCDs in Scotland.

** The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) has outlined recommendations to reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in its latest update to 2016 recommendations.
Dr Rachel Moon, professor of paediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the lead author of the recommendations highlighted that they apply to infants up to the age of one.
Moon said: "A baby’s death is tragic, heart-breaking and often preventable.”
"If we’ve learned anything, it’s that simple is best: babies should always sleep in a crib or bassinet, on their back, without soft toys, pillows, blankets or other bedding."
The report states that while many parents may choose to share a bed with their child, to help breastfeed or because of cultural preferences, this actually puts baby in danger.
Recommendations state that a baby should sleep on a flat surface, which is not inclined.
Avoiding smoke and nicotine exposure during pregnancy and after birth is also key, as is avoiding alcohol, marijuana, opioids, and illicit drug use during pregnancy and after birth, experts said.

** Illegal cigarettes worth £28,000 were seized from Bradford store

** A Bradford shopkeeper played a “central role” in an operation to sell large amounts of illicit cigarettes, a court has heard.
The offender this week appeared at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court after admitting 10 charges relating to the sale of counterfeit tobacco in his store.
The court heard that the contraband was worth around £28,000.
After deliberating, Magistrates decided they did not have sufficient sentencing powers to deal with the case. The shopkeeper will be sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on 11^th July.

** FDA to order Juul to take e-cigarettes off the market in the US

** The US Food and Drug Administration is preparing to order Juul Labs to take its e-cigarettes off the market in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.
Shares in the tobacco giant Altria Group, which owns a 35% stake in the maker of vaping products, fell 8.5% following the report. The decision could come as early as Wednesday, the Journal report said.
Juul has faced heightened scrutiny from regulators, lawmakers and state attorneys general over the appeal of its nicotine products to teenagers. In late 2019, under pressure, the company halted US sales of several flavours.
The FDA declined to comment on the report, while Altria and Juul did not respond to requests for comment.
