Hi there,
Democratic candidate for Congress (IL-17) and meteorologist, Eric Sorensen here. I hope that you’ve been staying cool -- quite a heat wave we've been having here in the Quad Cities! I'm drinking coffee on my deck next to my fish pond enjoying some fresh air before it gets steamy later today!! I shared a story with you this weekend that has a fun follow up. But to remind you...
For two decades, I was trusted to keep people ahead of both the daily and the severe weather that impacted our communities – not just when to grab an umbrella or throw on an extra layer, but when to bring the kids to the basement for a tornado, when to be careful on icy roads, and when to prepare for floods. I did this because I believed I worked for the people of my community, and it was my job to keep them safe.
And that has been the foundation of this campaign: trust, science, and communication. It’s on that first pillar, “trust”, that I want to share a story from the trail.
I was out knocking doors in Rock Island this weekend – meeting voters, talking with them about the challenges they’re facing, and listening to their concerns. A couple waved me over as I was leaving their street. I walked over and introduced myself.
They were SO excited to tell me that they knew exactly who I was, and that they were planning on voting for me. I made a joke about how they should’ve been on my knock list to which they responded, “oh no, we always vote Republican, but you’re different. You’re the person we know, the real person, the down to Earth candidate”.
I asked if we had met before, to which they said we hadn’t, but after watching me on TV every day for nearly a decade they felt as if I was part of their family. They said they trusted me, they trusted me to represent them in Congress.
Now our update: I drove by their house yesterday while out knocking a nearby street, and they had made a homemade yard sign! Friend, that’s what it’s going to take to win what will be one of the most competitive Congressional districts this fall: the candidate that people know, that they trust, that there’s real excitement for, and that they'll even make a homemade yard sign for!
The stakes are too high, and our Democratic majority is too important. Chip in to join the movement to bring more science, trust, and communication to Washington: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/es-june-em
Thanks for all that you do.
