Dear John,

Schools are closed for the summer, but you know we must uphold the best interests of children all year round. Will you donate to Alabama Arise today to help protect the integrity of the conversations in our classrooms?

I’m sure you saw the movement this year across the country, including in Alabama, to ban teaching “divisive concepts” related to race, sex and religion in public schools. The chilling effect of these bills could prevent our children from learning accurate and complete history, stifle critical thinking skills and hide the racist roots of many state policies.

This time, we won. Thanks to the hard work of our staff, members like you, and partners such as Project Say Something, NAACP and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, we successfully stopped these “divisive concept” bills in Alabama. However, these racist, sexist attacks on our education system don’t show signs of slowing down. We need your help to continue the fight to keep our classrooms a place for true and effective learning.

Securing state-level protections for marginalized groups is vitally important. To build an inclusive future free of poverty and hunger and to provide an equitable education for every Alabama student, we must hold open conversations and tell the truth about the legacy of racism in our state.

If you join us today, we can continue our work to ensure the Legislature focuses on bills that uplift communities and progress across the state, and not on ones that threaten to chill classroom discussion. Can you donate any amount today to help Arise ensure our children are getting a quality education?

Together, we can build a future for Alabama’s children based on truth, reconciliation and progress. I hope you’ll join us!

In solidarity,

Rebecca Howard
