Our democracy is at a crossroads, team.

On January 6th, far-right extremists staged an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Now, in 2022, we are still dealing with the fallout from that day. While the insurrection may have failed, the attacks on our democracy continue.

As the January 6th hearings move forward, we are learning more about the horror that went on behind the scenes. And many sitting Republican members of Congress — the very same folks elected to protect our democracy — chose extremism, party, and power over the American people who trusted them to protect our democracy.

Here's the bottom line: No one is above the law — including the president. But as we've recently learned, that didn't seem to stop former President Trump from going against the advice of White House officials and even his own campaign manager. Instead, Trump decided to call a false victory, inaccurately declaring the election a "fraud to the American public."

Listen, Derek is more committed than ever to protecting the cornerstones of our democracy. Hatred and corruption will always yield to justice.

We must work to restore checks and balances and strengthen accountability and transparency in our country. History has its eyes on this moment. But Derek is hopeful that historians will write that leaders worked to bring our country together — to do, as Lincoln stated in his second inaugural address, "the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds."

Derek and House Democrats are continuing to forward legislation that will strengthen our democratic systems to prevent future corruption. We won’t stop fighting until these reforms are law.

Thank you,

Team Kilmer
