Friends,

We’re rounding the corner on addressing gun violence.

I’ve been part of these bipartisan negotiations from the start. Why? Because the more we’re able to engage in the work of addressing gun violence — as opposed to just viewing it as a political stand-off — the more we can accomplish and the more lives we can save.

Now, we’re voting on common-sense legislation that will make our communities safer.

While we still have work to do, these measures will save lives and take on gun violence at home and internationally.

We will do this by funding enforcement of crisis intervention orders, protecting survivors of domestic violence, enhancing the review process for gun buyers under 21 years old, clarifying who is required to conduct background checks, investing in mental health services, and more.

I’ve also led on provisions to crack down on straw purchasing in the United States and trafficking firearms outside of the United States. With these provisions, we will take on the illegal use of middlemen to purchase guns. And we can cut down on gun violence in places like Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras — places where guns trafficked from the United States account for most of their gun violence.

Let me be clear: I’m a responsible gun owner who believes in taking on issues of public safety and protecting constitutional rights at the same time.

I’m not new to this work. When we lost 58 innocent people in a devastating mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, I brought forward legislation to ban the sale of bump stocks and other devices that enable semi-automatic weapons to work like automatic ones. I was a leading voice in the fight to repeal the Dickey Amendment and finally allow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fund research on how gun violence impacts public health.

I’ve also led the fight to address public safety and reduce crime here in New Mexico. I recently helped secure $350,000 in federal funding for the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office's Rapid DNA program to rapidly identify suspects and victims. Earlier this year, I helped bring in $1 million to support New Mexico women who were previously incarcerated in rebuilding their lives.

One of my top priorities is keeping people safe and ensuring our communities have the resources to make that happen. That’s why I will always be a voice for public safety and common-sense gun safety legislation in the U.S. Senate. Thank you for being an important partner in this work.

— Martin
