Tropical deforestation today is responsible for as much greenhouse gas pollution as all the trucks and cars in the world combined, and for the Indigenous tribes who call the Amazon home, the destruction of the rainforest, and the plants and animals in them, is a profound cultural loss.
Any realistic plan to sufficiently reduce GHG emissions to prevent global warming from reaching catastrophic levels must include eliminating the loss of tropical forests within the next decade.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says that by stopping deforestation and restoring forests, we can reduce global carbon pollution by at least 25%!
EDF is helping the world reach its pollution reduction targets in part through the LEAF (Lowering Emissions and Accelerating Forest Finance) Coalition. LEAF represents the largest private sector commitment to date to protect healthy tropical forests and support sustainable development that delivers significant benefits to Indigenous peoples and forest communities.
Collectively, the 23 jurisdictions eligible for LEAF funding have the potential to protect up to half a billion hectares of forest — an area larger than the entire European Union!
LEAF’s scale, pace and integrity give us hope that we can truly move the needle in a short amount of time to reverse deforestation.
This World Rainforest Day your gift to EDF’s Summer Match can make FOUR TIMES the difference for the Amazon rainforest AND the people who call it home.
Thank you for all that you do to fight for the environment,
