The first "People's Pledge" was crafted in Massachusetts in 2012, in the blockbuster Senate race that sent Elizabeth Warren to the U.S. Senate.
The premise was simple: No. Dark. Money.
Liz Warren and her GOP opponent agreed to eschew any and all unaccountable, unlimited and outside spending on their behalf. No Super PACs, no independent expenditures, no DC campaign committees, no party apparatuses, no interest groups (no, not even the ones Democrats like!) — just individual donations from real people.
It was an ironclad commitment to the grassroots. And today, I'm calling for the same thing in my primary race for the U.S. Senate. Yesterday we made big progress — one of my two primary opponents agreed to keep dark money out and we formally signed a 2020 People's Pledge.
We're not quite finished, though; the People's Pledge doesn't take effect until all three declared candidates sign it. And Senator Ed Markey has declined to add his name so far. We need to show him how important this issue is — and make it clear that Democrats can't just talk the talk on campaign finance, we need to walk the walk.
Let's prove what a grassroots campaign is made of. Chip in now to fuel the fight for a clean, transparent election decided by people!
