Hi John, Give OUT Day is a month-long fundraising campaign culminating on June 30, the only national day of giving for the LGBTQ+ community. As a PFLAG National supporter, how will you #GiveOUT this year? For me, I’m facilitating PFLAG Connects: Communities meetings for Latino families, providing a safe, facilitated, virtual space so that Latino LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones can come together for monthly support. PFLAG Connects: Communities is a game-changer. Culturally inclusive and relevant support is crucial for families who live at the intersection of marginalized identities. I see firsthand what it means to meet people where they are, as they are, through this vital program. Since the first PFLAG Connects: Communities meeting launched in November for Black/African American families, we’ve added meetings for the Latino community in October and the AAPI community in January, with plans to create spaces for more communities, such as military families, in the coming months. As the facilitator of the Latino community meetings, I help parents and loved ones ask questions and learn from others who have been through similar experiences. I was especially moved by this anonymous comment by one of our attendees after our first meeting: “This first meeting felt amazing: inclusive, diverse, kind, friendly, soothing, hopeful. As a lesbian Latinx it is extremely rare to feel this included and welcome. I have waited for a Latino PFLAG for years. Thank you so much.” Your support makes this work possible.
