DENNIS L. BAKER FOR U.S. SENATE
My name is Dennis Baker and I’m running for U.S. Senate. I’m not a career politician. My career was law enforcement, both on the Tulsa Police Department and the FBI where I developed a keen understanding of the security threats facing our country. I spent my time in law enforcement fighting for justice and security and am ready to bring those skills to D.C. to fight for you. Oklahomans deserve a senator who is determined to represent all Oklahomans, not just well-funded special interest groups. That’s why I need your vote in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, June 28th.
More than 580,000 Oklahomans, many of them children, live below the poverty line in Oklahoma. We value hard work here, which is why I will fight to pass a federal living wage law. People should be rewarded for the work that they do. If someone is working full time, they should be able to take care of themselves and their family without having to worry about whether they’ll be able to buy groceries this week or about how they’ll manage if their car breaks down.
That’s why I also support affordable childcare. My wife Wanda and I both worked for the Tulsa Police Department when our kids were little. You might think that two people with good and stable jobs would be able to manage childcare with no problem, but you’d be wrong. It was a struggle then and it is even more of a struggle now. Parents just want to do the best they can for their kids. If they’re having to spend a third of their income to make sure that their kids have a clean and safe place to stay when they can’t be at home then it is incredibly hard for that family to get on solid financial ground.
Part of the American Dream is the idea that we will leave our kids in a better position than we were in ourselves. In the current economic environment, that is not possible for the vast majority of Oklahomans. The Republicans who are currently in office have done nothing to improve things for us, so it’s time for them to get out of the way of those who are willing to do the work.
