When I was in high school, I realized from talking to some friends that I knew next to nothing about the way we get animal products. Not the modern way, anyway. I did some research, and wound up reading grisly accounts of what happens to animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses. That’s when I discovered the ugly side of industrial farming: the intensive confinement, the stress, the pain, and the denial of natural behaviors. It’s the side that animals know all too well. But it’s carefully shielded from us—because food companies know we’d never get behind it.

That was many years ago. Since then, horrifying reports and video footage have continued to trickle out. I’m sure we still don’t know the full scope of abuse, but what we do know would send shivers down your spine.

Chickens crammed into cages. Nursing pigs wedged into tiny crates, unable to even turn around. Can you imagine spending the better part of your life immobilized in a cage? Or being hung upside down to be slaughtered, and getting dragged into a vat of scalding water while you’re still alive? Or worse—being deemed “unfit” for slaughter, and instead being roasted to death in an unventilated barn?
