John,
White House Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy calls a spade a spade.
In a recent media interview, McCarthy said spreading false information about climate change was “absolutely” a threat to public health.
Climate change deniers use social media to push their misinformation, twist facts, distort images, and make their case. At the same time, companies and institutions are “greenwashing” their business, misrepresenting their work as environmentally friendly when it is not.
Fossil fuel companies saw how the tobacco industry successfully duped the public for decades and decided to copy their playbook. They used dark money to muddy the waters of the burgeoning scientific consensus around climate change, making it look like the debate was unsettled was enough to delay significant action year after year.
Gina McCarthy is calling out a surge of deliberate misinformation from right-wing pundits who have seized social media as a fast way to spread their lies and further a political agenda.
The result of these right-wing actions is catastrophic for the ability of scientists, environmentalists, and elected officials to take meaningful action as the window of opportunity to prevent the worst impacts of climate change rapidly closes.
It would be one thing if disinformation was just about scoring political points, but it unfortunately has far deadlier consequences. M isinformation is actively putting our health at risk.
John, SEEC members will continue to lead the fight to set the record straight on climate change and expose the lies of the far-right for the public health threat they are creating. SEEC members are focused on combating climate change by following the science.
We need more SEEC members in Congress to fight back against right-wing propaganda and disinformation. Will you pitch in right away to help? [[link removed]]
