John,

Governor Kim Reynolds has been hard at work trying to make Iowans’ lives harder and less safe.

Last week Gov. Reynolds signed a number of bills that are harmful and just plain reckless. Here’s what she did:

Reynolds cut 10 weeks worth of unemployment benefits for Iowans struggling to find work. That’s not all. The bill also requires unemployed Iowans to accept a lower paying job if they have been receiving unemployment benefits for more than a month.

It’s unconscionable, John.

It’s not just immoral to attack folks who are trying to get back on their feet, it’s also bad economic policy. We should be lifting up Iowa’s workers every chance we get, not making life even harder for them or forcing them to take jobs that pay less money.

Reynolds made Iowans less safe by cutting child care requirements. Gov. Reynolds reduced the number of staff required to take care of children – one worker for every seven 2-year-olds and one worker for every 10 3-year-olds. She’s also allowing 16-year-olds to work with children unsupervised in daycare facilities. Unsupervised? Really?

I’m not sure who is supposed to benefit from these political favors that Gov. Reynolds is doling out, but she’s certainly not doing any favors for Iowans.

If elected to the Iowa House, you can always count on me to put Iowa’s working families first. I would never support garbage bills like these that harm workers and make our families less safe.

We need responsible leadership and we need it now.
