In May 2009, Doorways became the only shelter in Virginia, and one of nine in the country, to offer safe shelter for people and pets fleeing violence. The all-weather kennel, which has heat, air conditioning, and indoor/outdoor areas, can house dogs, cats, and other small animals like hamsters and turtles. Order Online News The Cost of Poverty in Arlington From the Arlington Community Foundation The federal poverty level is a relic set in the 1960s based predominantly on food costs. It does not take into account other costs such as housing, child care, and health care. Policy makers agree that in the absence of an updated federal poverty line, we need to adopt a measure that reflects local living costs. Recently updated poverty information for Arlington indicates that about 24,300 people, or about 10,000 households in Arlington, make under 30% of the area median income (AMI), or $42,690 for a family of four. This is a more accurate reflection of poverty in our community, as current data shows that living costs for such a household in Arlington average three times that. Learn More Rising Tides Don't Life All Boats Between 2021 and 2022, Arlington's AMI increased by almost $15,000. While this may be good news for some, for those living at or below 30% AMI in our community, a raise in income might actually leave a worker and their family worse off. Even a minor increase in earnings likely results in losing eligibility for much-needed public benefits available for low-income families.
