North Carolina is home to me. It’s where I grew up, and it sits at the center of the universe for both of my loves — basketball and politics.
As a kid growing up on the north side of Charlotte, I never imagined that I’d win an NCAA championship or play basketball with the 44th President of the United States.
On this crazy journey, the one thing I learned is that it takes a team to come together to get big wins and bring about real change. Whether it is winning the ACC tournament, passing the Affordable Care Act, or working to elect the first African American President of the United States. They require teams of people working together for a larger purpose.
President Obama taught me what it took to be a public servant, and at the core, we need leaders with a deep understanding of communities and empathy for those constituents.
North Carolina has the chance to elect just that kind of leader as our next U.S. Senator with Cheri Beasley. She has dedicated her life to fighting for North Carolinians and for justice throughout the state.
Cheri is someone we can trust to always put North Carolina families first.
But like President Obama taught me, I know she can’t do it alone. It takes a team, and to turn North Carolina blue in November, Cheri needs all of us behind her.
I know firsthand there are things that can divide us — in politics and in basketball.
But I deeply believe Cheri Beasley can bring us together to win.
Together is the key word there. What I learned from my front-row seat on the 2008 Obama campaign was that a group of folks working together around a common cause can make a difference.
It’s how we won my home state then and elected our first Black president, and it’s how we will win this fall to elect our state’s first Black senator.
