Team,
In a moment I'm going to ask you to contribute before our end-of-quarter fundraising deadline, but first I want to let you know why this month is personal to me.
As a gay person growing up, I wasn’t always sure there would be a place for me. I never could have imagined becoming New Hampshire's first openly gay member of Congress was possible as a young person. But Granite Staters have welcomed me for who I am.
We've come a long way since I started in politics. My first speech on the floor of the New Hampshire House in my early 20s was against a bill that would have prevented New Hampshire from recognizing same sex marriages performed in Massachusetts.
While we lost that fight, we kept fighting – and eventually, marriage equality passed in New Hampshire and then was legalized nationwide by the Supreme Court.
During Pride Month we celebrate the LGBTQ+ individuals, activists, and trailblazers who spent their lives fighting for equal rights and reflect on the history of the movement that's brought us to where we are today.
But Pride Month is also a reminder of the fights ahead of us.
We’ve made incredible progress, but some of our LGBTQ+ community members still don’t have the same legal protections guaranteed to others. That's why I was an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, landmark legislation that prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
As your representative I promise to keep fighting for equal rights for all, but I need your help to defeat extreme opponents who promise to take us backward.
Before Pride Month ends and we approach our end-of-quarter deadline, will you chip in to keep fighting for equal rights for all in Congress? >> [link removed]
Thank you, and happy Pride Month!
