Dear Friend, 

Electronic Monitoring (EM) is rapidly expanding in the United States and the pandemic has only exacerbated the use of ankle shackles (also known as monitors)  

Ankle shackles are a form of surveillance - they restrict an individual’s liberty, limit their privacy, disrupt family relationships, and  jeopardize one’s  financial security. In addition, the devices can cause physical harm and/or traumatize the people forced to wear them - disproportionately, Black, brown, immigrant, and poor communities.

Let us be clear - EM is not a reform, it is an expansion of the criminal legal system that outsources the labor of the prison to the home.

As part of MJ’s efforts to create a world without surveillance, we are demanding the abolition of EM within the broader struggle to abolish mass incarceration.
