This was the 35th European Green Party Council
From 3 to 5 June, Greens from all over Europe gathered in Riga, Latvia for
the 35th European Green Party Council. We elected a new Committee, welcomed
two new candidate member parties, adopted five resolutions, and tackled
pressing issues. Next stop: Copenhagen, Denmark, from 2 to 4 December 2022,
for the 6th European Green Party Congress!

French parliamentary elections: A bittersweet result
The French Greens EELV (Europe Écologie-Les Verts) ran as part of the
Green-Left coalition NUPES (Nouvelle Union Populaire Écologique et
Sociale). The NUPES coalition secured 142 seats in the National Assembly,
whilst the Greens won 23, allowing them to form a parliamentary group 5
years after having lost it. Macron’s party LREM (La République En Marche
!) suffered a huge loss, which will impede him from implementing antisocial
reforms. With 246 seats, his coalition (Ensemble !) is short of securing an
absolute majority. But the far-right surged beyond expectations, with
Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (Rassemblement National) winning a record
89 seats - more than a tenfold increase from the party’s previously held
seats.

One step closer to transnational lists
On 3 May 2022, the European Parliament adopted a position on transnational
lists with large majority within a major reform of EU electoral law! As
Greens, we have long fought for a democratic future for Europe and
campaigned for to allow citizens to vote for transnational lists by
creating of a joint European constituency for the European elections. We
have done so because we believe this is an important step towards building
a real European public sphere that can foster political debate on the key
issues we face as a continent.

Film screening: the Green Screen
Recap: My Favorite War: How countries cope with historical trauma
As part of the Green Screen project, which engages citizens in contemporary
issues through films and debates, we explored Latvia's struggle for its own
independence and identity through the lens of memory politics, and how this
relates to Ukraine's own fight for freedom and self-determination. What is
the way Latvia has been dealing with its past and what are other European
examples of dealing with war crimes, repression of human rights, and ethnic
cleansing? How can transitional justice bring lasting peace and security in
post-conflict situations?

No Octopus Farms in Europe!
Did you know that octopuses are intelligent, they engage in often complex
and emotional behaviors? Yet millions of octopuses are killed for food each
year – and the number is rising. That's why the animal farming industry
has become interested in them too. Such as the Spanish company Nueva
Pescanova, that has decided to invest €65 million in opening the first
octopus farm in the world.
Current practices of slaughtering octopuses are extremely cruel. They are
either boiled alive, clubbed in the head, suffocated or even frozen in ice.
It's scientifically proven that octopuses have a capacity to feel pain,
anxiety and boredom - and it's terrifying to know that they would be
exposed to all of that if the first farm becomes reality. The octopus is a
unique species insofar as it has - until now - remained free from human
captivity.
We urgently call on the European Commission to ban octopus farming and the
sale of farmed octopus in the EU.

Congratulations to our newly elected Co-Chairs Thomas Waitz and Mélanie
Vogel, following a vote by Green party delegates at our 35th Council in
Riga. We also welcome Benedetta De Marte our new Secretary-General, as well

The EU's sustainable Taxonomy, the system for labelling sustainable
investments, puts a green label on an outdated fossil fuel like gas and on
problematic and expensive nuclear energy. The European Commission is
delaying our European energy transition and putting our energy security at
risk. That's why Greens are saying NO to greenwashing and YES to a
renewable energy future! [21]

On #IDAHOBIT2022 we're calling for the cruel treatment of so-called

This Pride Month, we are standing up for the LGBTI refugees from Ukraine
and beyond, very vulnerable to discrimination and hate crimes in both their
journeys and asylum processes, whose identity is too often questioned and
who may face worse persecution if they are deported back to their countries
by cruel bureaucracies. [23]

In the run up to the UN Environmental Summit this week, we hosted our own
event: ‘Beyond Stockholm +50: No more time to waste – a green
perspective for the next 50 years. We aimed to look at the global progress
of climate action and environmental protection since the establishment of
the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) 50 years ago - in
Stockholm. [16]

World Ocean Day: We need collective action to heal our planet and
revitalise our oceans. That’s why Greens across Europe are fighting for
biodiversity protection, climate ambition, the creation of more Marine
Protected Areas and an end damaging fishing practices like bottom trawling
which destroy sea life. [24]

Gas and nuclear aren’t green!
We just took a major step towards stopping the EU taxonomy from labelling
fossil gas and nuclear energy as ‘sustainable’. In a nail-biting vote,
the committees for environment and economy agreed with our objection. But
we are not there yet. The hardest part is still to come. We need to
convince all the Members of the European Parliament to support us for the
plenary vote in the first week of July. In one final push, we need everyone
to share our petition to stop this EU taxonomy [26]. Gas and nuclear
aren’t green. Pretending otherwise is greenwashing. It’s that simple.
