Here in New Mexico, we believe in not only securing and expanding voting rights for all citizens, but also in the importance of fiercely defending and protecting those rights against any threat to our democracy — even when it’s in our own backyard.

Just this past week, the Otero County Commission tried to disenfranchise thousands of voters by initially refusing to certify the recent June 7 Primary Election results. But we didn’t let them.

I applaud Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver’s quick action to bring this issue before the NM Supreme Court, who immediately ordered the commission to comply with their duty to certify these results. And this last Saturday, I traveled to the Otero County Administration Building myself to meet with voters, hear their concerns, and reiterate our shared commitment to upholding the rule of law in order to protect our voters and defend our democracy.

This attempt to undermine and subvert our election process was an attack on our core democratic principle — one person, one vote. Will you chip in today to join me and Maggie in protecting your vote and the votes of your fellow New Mexicans?
