Friend,
When the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, people who want abortions will need to travel to states like California, where abortion will still be protected.
But anti-abortion states are passing laws to prevent people from obtaining out-of-state reproductive care.(1) And even more terrifying, information brokers are selling location data for people that visit abortion clinics – setting up police in states where abortion is illegal to use data from smartphones to track and prosecute people seeking essential abortion care.(2)
That’s why Courage California is demanding that Google stop collecting location data, so that the privacy of all people can be protected and abortion seekers may be kept safe.
Sign our petition and tell Google to delete location data and protect people seeking abortions!
There is already dangerous precedent for this terrible use of location data. In Seattle, police used geofence warrants to harvest location data about people who were near a 2020 Black Lives Matter protest, and police across the country are increasingly relying on location data to surveil communities.(3)
And an anti-abortion group used location data to target patients in Planned Parenthood clinics and send them disinformation-filled advertisements designed to shame and scare them away.(4)
By continuing to collect and store location data, companies like Google are putting people seeking abortions at increased risk of criminalization. Police can use that location data to identify people visiting abortion clinics, and right-wing prosecutors can obtain warrants to use location data to jail pregnant people and people seeking abortions.(5)
Sign the petition to tell Google to delete location data and defend safe access to essential abortion care!
Yours in the fight for reproductive freedom, Mai, along with Amber, Angela, Annie, Irene, Isidra, Jay, Lindsay, LisaMarie, Mai, Raquel and Scottie (the Courage team)
