John: Seven years ago, the Supreme Court officially made gay marriage legal across our country.

Sadly, despite such strides toward equality, our nation is still embroiled in a divisive reckoning, as state legislatures and politicians promote hateful legislation targeting those in the LGBTQ community.

My daughter, Molly, is gay. Later this year she will marry her incredible fiancée and begin a life together. Molly is my pride and joy – and I can't wait to celebrate together and smile as big as we did in this photo.

Chrissy Houlahan and Molly, her daughter, are posing outside together during the holidays.

When I was elected to Congress, I made a promise to her to do everything in my power to protect and defend the LGBTQ community.

That's why I helped the House pass the historic Equality Act to guarantee all LGBTQ Americans the full protection of federal civil rights laws. And it's why I continue to fight for the rights of all Americans.

This Pride Month, I ask my fellow parents, educators, and lawmakers to simply love one another and embrace our diversity and differences regardless of gender identity, race, ethnicity, background, or sexual orientation. In a just America, love is love.

My family – like so many families across our great country – is stronger for it.

Happy Pride Month. There is work to be done.

Chrissy
