John,
How can working people defend and strengthen our democracy? I’ll be joining a panel discussion to dive into this question on June 28th — I hope you can join us [[link removed]] !
The last few years have been rough ones for democracy. The forces of neoliberalism have ramped up their assault on our freedom to determine our shared future: seeking to violently overturn elections, undermining trust in our public institutions, intimidating and coercing workers organizing for a voice on the job.
At the same time, we’re seeing a surge in people coming together to insist on a voice at work, at city hall, and at the ballot box. Workers at Amazon, Starbucks, and many more companies are organizing. Unions are making community priorities central to contract negotiations. Neighborhoods are demanding local public budgets reflect their needs. In the face of barrier after barrier, record numbers of people are turning out to cast votes and ensure their votes are counted.
I was honored to partner with some brilliant movement thinkers — Sarita Gupta of the Ford Foundation, Stephen Lerner of Bargaining for the Common Good, Joseph McCartin at the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor — to write a chapter for the new Cambridge Handbook of Labor and Democracy , edited by Mark Barenberg of Columbia Law School and Angela B. Cornell of Cornell Law School. On June 28th, we’ll discuss the book and the links between labor, democracy, and the common good.
