Pride is a time of celebration, John. A time to celebrate people being their authentic selves. A time to celebrate acceptance and love. And a time to celebrate people for simply being who they are.

I kicked off Pride month by celebrating with the community of Bellerose. It was wonderful to meet with Long Islanders coming together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and all their incredible achievements.

Pride is also a time to reflect on the work yet to be done. Some states in America still discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community for who they are and whom they love. Make no mistake: I will be a fierce defender of LGBTQ+ rights in Congress.

To all those who do not feel safe to be open about their sexuality or gender identity, I say: You are loved and respected for who you are. And I will always be your champion.
