At this point, the maps for the 2022 election are almost set, but the fight must continue – not just for fair redistricting but for our very democracy. You see, fair maps and free and fair elections go hand in hand.

And right now, free and fair elections are very much under attack by the GOP. Through gerrymandering, yes, but also through voter suppression, lies about “election fraud” and what happened in 2020, and threats against election officials and processes. Further, the independence of state courts is under assault by the same forces who seek to circumvent the will of the people.

That’s why we must pivot part of our work to focus on the state-level races, including secretary of state and state supreme court races, that will be the next battleground in the fight to protect our democracy.

We will support fair maps champions who fought map manipulation across the country during this redistricting cycle. We will hold map manipulators accountable. At the ever-important state legislative level, we will support fair-map champions in states where fair redistricting has made the biggest gains, where we can protect gubernatorial vetoes, and where we can invest in building power over the decade.

And we will do it in partnership with this community, John. I can’t stress this enough: You are a trusted, invaluable partner in everything we do. You’re the reason that 56% of Americans either saw a neutral or net improvement in the fairness of their congressional district lines this cycle. And you’re the reason I firmly believe that we will be successful in protecting our democracy from all the attacks.
