Recently when I was in the Western Part of the state meeting with the Tribal Council of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee I was asked about Uvalde. It’s hard for me to talk about Uvalde without thinking about the shooting at Sandy Hook. I wanted to write you today to share with you an excerpt of my comments as I remember them.

“I worked with youth at Newtown United Methodist Church in Sandy Hook, Connecticut. It’s the church where I became Methodist, and where I answered my call to ministry and had my call to ministry affirmed. Though I had stopped working there only months before because my position was paid with grant money, I went back that night to help with ministry. We didn’t let the cameras into the church to film, but maybe we should have. Maybe laws and hearts would have changed from seeing the grief. We lost children from the church in that shooting. One of them came to the youth group. Your life and perspective change when you know the people killed in these shootings and when you have sat with survivors hearing the stories of how they had to hide in closets or help evacuate students. I am a firearm owner and come from a family of sportsmen and women, but I know our children deserve better. Our teachers deserve better, and our communities deserve better. We need access to mental healthcare and real legislation.”

I’ve spent a huge portion of my life not just advocating for the rights of people, but advocating for the rights of children. I want all children to be able to go to safe schools, and for teachers to be able to teach them in safe environments. I want families to be able to live in communities that are free from drive-by shootings and the lack of economic opportunity that drives many toward lives of crime. I want us as a nation to begin to heal from the violence that has crept into all of our communities.

When you support this campaign, you are making it possible for me to reach people all across the state of North Carolina. So far I have visited 50 counties in North Carolina. I have 50 counties to go to. These include the counties in the southernmost part of the state, and along our Northern border. I’d like to have these visits completed by the end of July. We are looking for two hundred and fifty 250 dollar donors and ten maximum donors. However, any amount you can give to the campaign is greatly appreciated. The maximum donation amount is $2900.00. This is a grassroots campaign and without your support, the voices of millions of North Carolinians will go unheard.
