Reflecting on the weekend's Juneteenth celebrations, we commemorate people seizing their freedom in the United States. We call attention to the nearly two and one half years it took for the Emancipation Proclamation to be fulfilled for the people of Texas on June 19, 1865. We recall the anguish of justice delayed and the joy of hard-fought victory.
Juneteenth is celebrated with pride and symbolizes the strength of solidarity, unity of spirit, and resistance of a people who would be free. In 2022, in the aftermath of centuries of slavery and its legacy of institutionalized racism that has gripped our nation and the world, we boldly protest and demand the end of systemic demonization and disenfranchisement of Black Lives.

Symbolic recognition of Juneteenth as a holiday carries real weight.
