Dear Reader,

It’s a paradox worthy of reflection: Limits are a necessary precondition for true freedom.

This idea is not very fashionable right now. The progressive imagination is animated by the cri de coeur of dismantling of all limits.

First Things was founded on the opposite conviction. As our founding editorial declares, “religion best serves public life by relativizing the importance of public life, especially of public life understood as politics.”

This points to a kindred paradox: training our gaze to the heavens actually makes us better citizens here on earth. We believe that the religious voices must be heard, especially at a cultural moment when many infuse public life with eschatological meaning.

If you share this conviction, I hope you’ll contribute to our 2022 Spring Campaign. Visit firstthings.com/donate to make your tax-deductible gift today.

Thank you for being a part of this rich intellectual community of First Things. If you too value the First Things mission, community, and voice, please consider a gift toward our 2022 Spring Campaign today.

Yours,
