John,

This weekend, we celebrated Juneteenth — a commemoration of the end of slavery and a celebration of Black Americans' relentless commitment to liberation and joy. Throughout the history of our country, fearless, bold Black leaders have fought for freedom and justice, working to make our nation a place that lives up to the values Americans hold as our North Star.

But even today, 157 years after the abolition of slavery, our society and our country continue to grapple with its enduring legacy. We see it in the income disparities between Black and white families, widened by generations of racist policies and segregation. We see it in hospitals when mothers arrive to deliver their babies. We see it in the differences in how we treat those struggling with the opioid epidemic.

As senator, I promise to work to make sure that we do better; that we raise our children to build an inclusive, equitable future; that we never turn our back on this critical work; and that we ensure every family has a fair shot at their American Dream.

I hope that you find time to celebrate the immeasurable contributions from the Black community, honor the work of Black leaders and liberators, and acknowledge the work left to be done. I need you in this with me, John, to build a better future for all Missourians.

With gratitude and hope,

Trudy
