Dear Friend,
Today we celebrate Juneteenth, the day the news of freedom from slavery by law reached Galveston, Texas. As a nation, County, and as a community, we have been learning more and more about this day. I attended three Juneteenth events this weekend and reflected on my time as a teacher in Texas where Barbara Jordan grew up and the ongoing work we must do to achieve true freedom and make the American Dream real.
I also want to thank you from the bottom of my heart as so many contributed to help make our event for Elaine Luria a success. See below for more information on it and a picture.
And I want to continue this work, so I ask below if you can join me next Sunday for our General Election Campaign Kickoff.
On Saturday after the County Board Meeting I was given a few moments to reflect on Juneteenth at the Arlington Black Clergy's Event at the Wilson Boulevard Christian Church
Our general election kickoff is this coming Sunday, the 26th from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. We are holding the Kickoff at the Barcroft Community House because one of the primary reasons I ran for the Board was to work on both affordable housing and housing affordability. Both are critical parts of achieving the American Dream in Arlington. I will talk about the Barcroft Agreement we approved last year and what it means for affordable housing and the missing middle housing work that we are engaged in. Young Dems and Senior Dems can join for $25 and no supporter or interested community member will be turned away.
Come to the General Election Campaign Kickoff--Sunday at 3 pm at the Barcroft Community House ([link removed])
This is one of my favorite pictures from 2018's campaign.
I'll work my heart out for the ideas we cherish this year, too. Having you join me this coming Sunday would be an honor:

The photo above and this Juneteenth happen to be linked. I joined the Rubalcava's and many of those in this photo at a table for a Juneteenth event last night: the Virginia Black History Month's Juneteenth Gala.
One speaker at the Gala referred to the fact that freedom was not realized via the order that reached Galveston. I thought of Slavery by Another Name, the book I read last year that is reflected in the text of the order, which said essentially stay in place--you are not fully free. I also reflected on the progress we have made since World War II and the work that remains to be done as I read His Name is George Floyd. Much work remains to be done even as much progress has been made. I would love for you to be part of doing that work by joining me on Sunday.
The event with Rep. Elaine Luria was wonderful. We raised $22,351 toward our $25,000 goal. If you want to chip in even a little to get us to $25k I'd be grateful, even if I know it is a significant ask:

Thank you for reading this, considering joining us for the Kickoff on Sunday, and being part of our shared work to create a better Arlington, Virginia, and country. Because of you I am serving and running for re-election with a full heart.
